Sefam Néa CPAP User Guide

CPAP is the most effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The CPAP machine sits at your bedside and blows air at a low pressure through a mask that sits either over your nose or both your nose and mouth. The pressure is just enough to hold your airway open and stop it from collapsing as you sleep.

It’s essential to use CPAP every night to experience its full benefits.

This guide should be used alongside the manufacturer’s instructions below, which must be read in full.

Your CPAP set contains;

  1. Sefam Néa CPAP machine.

  2. Hose

  3. Mask

  4. Air filter

Taking Care of a CPAP Machine

The CPAP Machine

  • Always place the machine on a firm and flat surface near the bedside that is clean and free from dust

  • Do not run the machine from in the bag.

  • Keep the machine clean by wiping it down with a damp cloth once per week

  • The air inlet has a filter to prevent dust from being drawn in through the machine. It can be accessed on the side of the machine and should be removed and cleaned by rinsing it under running water and leaving it to air dry before replacing it into position. Never run the machine without having the air filter in place.

Your Mask

  • Your mask's seal should be cleaned every morning with gentle detergent and warm water then left to air dry. Do not leave to dry in direct sunlight or near heat sources such as radiators.

  • The mask frame should be cleaned with the same method but on a weekly basis.

  • The mask head straps should be either hand washed or placed on a cool washing machine cycle once a week

The Hose

  • The hose should be cleaned once a week by leaving it to soak in warm water and gentle detergent. Ensure the hose is fully dry before using.

  • If some water remains in the hose, it can be connected to the machine, leave the mask end on the floor on a towel and run the machine. This will blow dry the hose.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A small amount of mask leak is normal, but if the leak become excessive it can become bothersome and also means you aren’t getting the full benefit of the machine. Make sure that the mask is fitting correctly by adjusting the back straps.

Ensure the cushion of the mask is washed every day. The cushion absorbs oils from your skin and may not make a good seal if these are not washed off. Wash in warm water with gentle detergent and leave to air dry.

Facial hair can make a good seal more difficult to achieve. Beard trimming and removing stubble can help.

  • The machine blows air from the room, and so will only be as warm as the room you are in. Turning up the heating in the room can help. You can also run the hose under the duvet to warm it slightly.

If you have the heated humidifier, then the temperature can be increased by following the machine instruction manual. A heated CPAP hose can also be purchased.

  • Yes. CPAP needs to be worn every day to prevent your symptoms from returning. If you are flying, we can provide you with a letter for the airline advising that your CPAP machine should be carried as extra hand baggage so that it doesn’t get lost or damaged in the hold. Please ask us at least a week in advance if you require a letter.

12v adaptors that connect to your vehicle can be used to power your CPAP machine while camping. Battery packs can also be used.

  • The hose will fit the CPAP masks from any manufacturer, however some need a small plastic connector. Please make sure this connector is in place.

  • The holes at the front of the mask are for you to breathe out of. This is where your exhaled waste gases go. Never cover or tape over these holes.
